Coronavirus (COVID-19) Testing

As restrictions once again begin to ease, Doctor Kalia, our in-house private GP shares some top tips on the pros and cons of testing in this rapidly changing environment and explains what results mean for patients:

How effective was my COVID-19 vaccine?

COVID-19 Spike Protein Antibody Blood Tests

The COVID-19 Spike Protein antibody blood test looks for antibodies targeted against the Spike Protein on the COVID-19 virus. This test measures how effectively your vaccine has helped generate immunity against the COVID-19 Spike Protein. Accuracy rates of 98.5%.

The test will be carried out on a drawn blood sample taken in clinic by Doctor Kalia or Dr. Hollingworth taken at least 14 days post-vaccination.

Results have a maximum 24-hour turnaround time and cost £120.

Have I had it?

COVID-19 Antibody Blood Tests

The COVID-19 antibody blood test looks for long term antibodies (known as IgG) in your blood. This test measures whether you have had the virus in the past. Accuracy rates of 99.5%.

These are the tests currently approved by Public Health England and are fully compliant with government guidelines. The test will be carried out on a drawn blood sample taken in clinic by Doctor Kalia or Dr. Hollingworth and should be carried out more than 14 days after suspected infection.

These tests are far more accurate than finger-prick testing.

Results have a maximum 24-hour turnaround time and cost £120.

Needing to travel?  or Do I have COVID-19?

COVID-19 Nasal/Throat Swab (PCR-Testing)

All PCR COVID lab testing will now be guaranteed for turnaround within 24hours from receipt in the laboratory.

A nasal/throat PCR swab detects if you are currently infected with COVID-19. These swabs are the most accurate tests of virus detection on the market and are the gold standard of testing. As a result, they are currently a mandatory requirement for travel.

The PCR tests are accredited and approved by Public Health England and the Department of Health. These tests can help to provide a travel and fitness to fly certificate which are issued at no extra cost.

For symptomatic patients, these kits can be delivered to your home, collected from clinic or delivered to you in your car for Doctor-guided, self-administration.

Results have a maximum 24 hour turnaround time from receipt in the lab, are far more accurate than lateral flow and cost £189.
